Thames Water has escaped being fined by regulator
Ofwat for failing to
meet its annual water leak reduction targets three years in a row.
Thames Water must invest an extra
£150m to stop leaks, which is twice as much as the fine the regulator
could have imposed. |

Reported A Leak and It
Still Hasn't Been Fixed? |
Despite
some improvement since last year, Thames
Water announced that it still loses 896 million litres of
water through leaks each day.
|
|
Consumer
groups have voiced concern that Thames
Water has paid £246million of the profit to its
German parent company. They argue more of this money should be spent
on tackling leaks.
|
In
a damning statement, Ofwat
said: 'The company's poor leakage performance is not only
inefficient, it is also contributing to water shortages
that have led Thames Water to impose a hosepipe ban and seek
a drought order.'
|
Ofwat's leakage announcement came
on the same day that Thames
Water announced that pre-tax profits were up by 31 per cent
to £346.5 million.
